Arusha, Tanzania | 23–24 July 2026 – The Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST), in collaboration with the University of Dodoma (UDOM) through the AfriAI Research Lab, successfully co-hosted the 2nd International Workshop on AI for Africa’s Sustainable Development (AAIAC 2026) with support from the International Development Research Centre (IDRC-CRDI).

Speaking on behalf of the NM-AIST Vice Chancellor, Prof. Anthony Mshandete, the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic, Research and Innovation (DVC-ARI) reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to advancing Artificial Intelligence through research, innovation, capacity building and strategic partnerships. He noted that these efforts are aimed at fostering African-led AI solutions that address societal challenges and contribute to sustainable development.

NM-AIST, through its School of Computational and Communication Science and Engineering (CoCSE), played a key role in organising the workshop and contributed to a number of technical sessions and high-level panel discussions, including the plenary session on AI Leadership and the Digital Economy.

The workshop convened researchers, policymakers, industry leaders and innovators from across Africa and beyond to exchange knowledge, share research findings and explore the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence in promoting inclusive and sustainable development across the continent
