The Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to strengthen strategic partnerships aimed at advancing research, innovation, entrepreneurship and sustainable development.
The MoU signing ceremony took place on 29 May 2026 at Johari Rotana in Dar es Salaam and was witnessed by the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic, Research and Innovation (DVC-ARI), Prof. Anthony.
Prof. Mshandete described the agreement as an important milestone in NM-AIST’s commitment to fostering impactful collaborations that contribute to national and global development.

He highlighted that the partnership aligns with the institution’s distinctive 5D Business Model, which focuses on Research and Innovation, Postgraduate Training and Skills Development, Outreach and Community Engagement, Incubation Management and Commercialization.
Prof. Mshandete added that the collaboration aligns with NM-AIST’s vision of driving scientific excellence, technological advancement, and socio-economic transformation through knowledge-based solutions.
Prof. Mshandete further noted that the partnership is expected to strengthen institutional capacity, promote innovation-driven solutions, enhance academia-industry linkages, and contribute to sustainable development outcomes at national, regional, and international levels.
He added that the collaboration will provide a valuable platform for knowledge exchange, capacity building and the co-creation of innovative solutions to address emerging societal challenges.

He also emphasized that the partnership presents an opportunity for NM-AIST to expand its international and regional networks while reinforcing its position as a leading centre of excellence in science, engineering, technology and innovation dedicated to transforming society through knowledge and innovation.
The MoU focuses on fostering collaboration between higher learning institutions and development partners to produce market-ready graduates and unlock opportunities for young people through strategic partnerships, skills development, innovation and entrepreneurship initiatives.
