The Chairperson of the Council of the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST), Ambassador Maimuna Tarishi, has emphasized the importance of ensuring that research, technology and innovations generated by the Institution are translated into tangible products, services and practical solutions to societal challenges, in line with the implementation of Tanzania’s Development Vision 2050.

Speaking at the 12th Graduation Ceremony of NM-AIST, Ambassador Tarish said innovation should not remain on paper or end with the registration of intellectual property rights but should be transformed into practical solutions addressing challenges in agriculture, livestock, business, the environment and the economy.

“Innovation should not remain on paper or end with BRELA registration; let us translate it into practical solutions that address the various challenges facing society,” said Ambassador Tarishi.

She also urged graduates to use the knowledge and skills they acquired at NM-AIST to serve the people of Tanzania and Africa, rather than using their education solely for personal benefit.

For his part, the Vice Chancellor of NM-AIST, Prof. Maulilio Kipanyula said a total of 138 graduates completed their studies during the ceremony, producing 219 scientific publications and seven patents.

He said NM-AIST will continue encouraging students and researchers to develop products, make discoveries and publish their research in internationally recognized scientific journals.

Prof. Kipanyula also revealed that 19 NM-AIST researchers were recognized in awards presented by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology for their publications in high-impact scientific journals around the world.

NM-AIST continues to transform knowledge into innovation, innovation into products and services, and research into practical solutions to societal challenges contributing to the implementation of Tanzania’s Vision 2050.
