Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Innovation Mentorship and Coaching Platform for Africa (STEMi-Africa) is an initiative of the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST) post-graduate students’ community. It primarily aims at contributing to among other global, regional and continental initiatives, to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and Africa Agenda 2063. The STEMi-Africa platform currently has membership from 12 African countries including; Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Sudan, Nigeria, Malawi, Burkina Faso, Rwanda, Mozambique, Ethiopia, Cameroon and Zambia, under patronage of among others, the top administration and teaching staff of the NM-AIST. These are supported by the NM-AIST community, including staff, students, NM-AIST alumni, and faculty members driven by passion and a spirit of volunteerism. The platform works hand in hand with primary and secondary schools, STEMi ambassadors, STEMi coaches and mentors, Non-Governmental Organizations, graduate and undergraduate students and people with interest in Science, Technology and Innovation (STI).

Vision

To bring together efforts geared towards promoting increased enrolment in STEM related subjects and carriers especially by women in Africa.

Mission

To act as a powerhouse for inspiration, hands on practices, community outreach activities, training, mentorship and coaching of young scientists, engineers and technologists to become STEMi mentors/coaches and ambassadors in their respective countries and communities.

The objectives of this platform are;

1. Giving back to the community and bring up the next generation of scientists

2. To promote hands on practices through outreach activities and innovation

3. To link/network/map with innovators within the community and work with them by promoting their works

4. To utilize the established East African Community STEM program by EAC and other relevant shareholders and NGOs

5. Sustainability of the STEM mentorship at NM-AIST and beyond
