Dr. Akida Ignas Meya obtained a Bachelor in Agronomy from Sokoine University of Agriculture Tanzania, in 2004. He worked for the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Co-operatives as an extension staff member for four years before joining the same University for a Masters in Crop Sciences in September 2009. In 2013, he moved to the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST), Tanzania, to join the faculty team in the Life Sciences and Bio-Engineering School as an assistant lecturer.

Akida is currently pursuing a PhD on nutrient use efficiency in banana-bean intercropping systems in the humid highlands of central-northern Tanzania, and his research is funded by VLIR-UOS, the Institutional University Co-operation programme. Central to his research is the question of how best to optimize traditional soil fertility management strategies to enhance productivity outputs in smallholder banana farms. The research is supervised by Professors Roel Merckx, Rony Swennen, Patrick Ndakidemi and Doctor Kelvin Mtei.
