Plastic pollution has become one of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time—and NM-AIST is stepping up to foster awareness and action. In a thought-provoking public talk titled “The Age of Plastic,” environmental expert Prof. Karl Fleischmann led an engaging session exploring the science behind microplastics, their impact on human health, and the urgent need for sustainable solutions.

Speaking during the opening session on August 6, 2025, Prof. Emmanuel Mpolya, on behalf of the Deputy Vice Chancellor – Academic, Research and Innovation, emphasized the timeliness of the discussion, as global plastic use continues to rise—often without adequate systems for disposal. He highlighted the importance of building community knowledge to encourage more responsible plastic consumption and management.

The session brought together 30 participants, joining both virtually and in person, for an insightful discussion that bridged science and community action. Attendees explored how microplastics move through ecosystems and the potential long-term risks they pose, gaining a clearer understanding of their role in environmental change.

Participants expressed a renewed sense of responsibility and committed to becoming ambassadors for sustainable living. Many pledged to take the knowledge back to their communities, advocating for safer plastic use and more environmentally friendly practices.
