Prof. Yusufu Adeid Chande Jande

Associate Professor
Yusufu is interested in doing research on energy, capacitive deionization for desalination and CO 2 capture, and rapid prototyping specifically in producing uniformly porous and graded porous structures using selective laser sintering (SLS) and producing composite materials from porous structures manufactured using SLS.

Experience & Activities

Prof. Yusuph Abeid Chande Jande is an Associate Professor at the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST) in Tanzania, where he serves as the Deputy Centre Leader of the Water Infrastructure and Sustainable Energy Futures (WISE-Futures) Centre. He holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Hanyang University, South Korea, and earned his MSc and BSc degrees from Middle East Technical University, Turkey. Prof. Jande’s research focuses on energy systems, water treatment technologies, and advanced materials. He was also a Fulbright Visiting Scholar at Georgia Institute of Technology, USA. His work aims to address critical water and energy challenges in East Africa through innovative research and sustainable solutions.

Key Research Projects & Works

  1. “Regulating the Fluoride Content in Water for Clean Water and Good Health”
    • Prof. Jande is the project leader. PASET Scholarship Fund
    • The project is developing a capacitive deionization (CDI) stack to remove fluoride from water, particularly targeting areas like Ngaramtoni in Arusha, using electrodes made from biomass (agricultural wastes such as rice husks). PASET Scholarship Fund
  2. Arduino‑based low‑cost electrical load tracking system with a long‑range mesh network
    • Collaboration where Prof. Jande is a co‑author. Hep Journals
    • The system uses LoRa communications and mesh networking, aimed at tracking electrical load including in rural Tanzanian contexts, off-grid settings. Hep Journals
  3. “Preparation and Characterization of Biogenic Chitosan‑Hydroxyapatite Composite: Application in Defluoridation”
  4. “Strength and Durability Properties of Concrete Containing Pumice and Scoria as Supplementary Cementitious Material”
    • Co‑supervised / co‑authored by Prof. Jande.
  5. “Optimization of Sub‑ and Supercritical Water Gasification of Rice Husk Enhanced with Iron‑doped Alkaline‑Earth Catalysts”
    • Prof. Jande was Supervisor 1 for this PhD project.
  6. Modeling of Capacitive Deionization in Batch Mode Operation for Desalination
    • Authored by Prof. Jande (with collaborator W. S. Kim)
