Dr. Mwema Felix Mwema

My research generally focuses on fate and transport of pesticides in the environment, environmental conservation for health and sustainable development, assessment of biomass energy resources (charcoal and firewood) and life cycle assessment of products and services.

Experience & Activities

Dr. Mwema is a lecturer and researcher specializing in the intersection of agriculture and the environment. He earned his PhD in Engineering and Technology from Thammasat University in Thailand, a Master of Engineering in Environmental Technology and Management from King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (Thailand), and a Bachelor of Technology in Agricultural Engineering from Sam Higginbottom University of Agriculture, Technology and Sciences in India. He is affiliated with the School of Materials, Energy, Water, and Environmental Sciences (MEWES) at the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST), where his teaching and research focus on agriculture, environmental science, pesticide risk assessment, food safety, water quality monitoring, resource evaluation and sustainable biomass energy utilization, as well as life cycle assessment of products and services.

Dr. Mwema teaches/ coordinates/ supervises/ examines the following courses at NM-AIST:

  1. Environmental Modeling (EnSE 6252).
  2. Advanced Environmental Toxicology (EnSE 7253).
  3. Advanced Industrial Ecology (EnSE 7255).
  4. Environmental Degradation of Materials (MaSE 6211).
  5. Research Methods and Communication (MEWE 6101/7101).

Dr. Mwema is a member of the following societies and organizations:

  • Aug 2012–to date  -- Graduate Engineer (GradIET), Institution of Engineers Tanzania.

  • May 2012–to date -- Graduate Engineer (GE), Engineers Registration Board (Tanzania).

  • Jun–Aug 2014 -- Awarded a three month PhD visiting grant to the Department of Agroecology, Aarhus University, Denmark.
  • 2013–2016 -- Awarded Excellent Foreign Student scholarship (full scholarship; tuition fee and research support) to pursue a doctoral degree.

  • 2009–2011 -- Awarded scholarship type II (partial scholarship; tuition fees and research only) to pursue master’s degree.

  • 2009 -- Graduated Bachelor of Technology in Agricultural Engineering with first division with honours.
