The Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST) has officially launched the jerseys for the second season of the Nelson Mandela Marathon, under the theme: “Stride for Success, Step for Success.” The much-anticipated event is set to take place on July 20, 2025, at the institution’s campus in Arusha.
During the launch event, NM-AIST Vice Chancellor Professor Maulilio Kipanyula announced that Hon. Mwinyi Ahmed Mwinyi, the District Commissioner of Arumeru, will be the guest of honor at the marathon’s climax.
“This is not just an ordinary race,” said Prof. Kipanyula. “It is part of a broader campaign to promote practical education in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Through sports—especially running—we can connect with communities more effectively and inspire young people, especially girls, to gain confidence and pursue careers in science.”

He further noted that this year’s marathon will be even more exciting, with the participation of international runners and a special 2.05-kilometer race for children, aimed at making history by including the next generation.
The event will feature races in four categories: a 2.05 km children’s run, 5 km, 10 km, and a Half Marathon (21 km). More than just a competition, the marathon serves as a platform to promote STEM education—particularly among girls and young women—through sports.
CRDB Bank’s Business Manager, Mbelwa Henry Luhambiga, whose institution is among the event’s key sponsors, stated:
“Sports are a powerful driver of community development. Through the Nelson Mandela Marathon, we empower individuals to improve their health while fostering social unity and nurturing talent. CRDB is proud to be part of this movement that blends academic and health-focused goals.”
Meanwhile, Arusha Regional Athletics Association Secretary General John Steven added:
“This year’s marathon will feature international athletes who are preparing for the World Athletics Championships set to take place in Tokyo, Japan, on September 13, 2025. It presents a great learning opportunity and global exposure for local runners.”

The institution also expressed gratitude to all sponsors supporting this second season, including Coca-Cola Bonite Bottlers Ltd, CRDB Bank, Kilimanjaro Drinking Water, NSK Hospitals, the Tanzania Red Cross Society,Temdo and other stakeholders in health, safety, and sports.
