The Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST) has taken a major step toward advancing its mission of becoming a premier center of excellence in science, technology, and innovation. During its 3rd meeting, the institution’s International Advisory Board (IAB) outlined an ambitious vision aimed at positioning NM-AIST as a globally competitive institution.

Speaking during the meeting, Hon. Ami Mpungwe, a distinguished member of the IAB and former diplomat, emphasized the strategic importance of transforming NM-AIST into a world-class academic and research hub. He stressed the need to attract top-tier talent from Tanzania, across Africa, and internationally, reinforcing the university’s commitment to excellence and global relevance.

The board engaged in vibrant discussions around transformative initiatives intended to propel NM-AIST’s growth trajectory. Key among these were:

  • Adoption of Emerging Digital Technologies: Recognizing the central role of digital transformation in education and research, the board encouraged NM-AIST to deepen its focus on artificial intelligence, data science, and digital infrastructure to enhance learning, innovation, and regional impact.
  • Establishment of a Centre of Excellence for Renewable Energy: With Africa’s increasing demand for sustainable energy solutions, the proposed center aims to position NM-AIST at the forefront of research and development in renewable energy technologies, including solar, wind, and bioenergy.
  • The ‘Waste to Wealth’ Initiative: This innovative concept focuses on developing circular economy solutions by turning waste into valuable resources, promoting sustainability, and creating socio-economic opportunities for local communities.
  • Strategic Resource Mobilization: Board members underscored the importance of diversifying funding sources through partnerships with government, private sector, international donors, and alumni networks to ensure long-term sustainability and institutional autonomy.

Prof. Maulilio Kipanyula, the Vice Chancellor of NM-AIST, expressed deep appreciation for the board’s visionary leadership. He emphasized the university’s commitment to translating strategic guidance into actionable outcomes, stating that the institution must “think globally, act locally,” in its pursuit of solving real-world challenges through science, engineering, and innovation.

The meeting concluded with a renewed sense of purpose and determination to elevate NM-AIST’s role as a key player in Africa’s scientific and technological advancement, aligned with the continent’s development goals and global sustainability agendas.
