The Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST), in collaboration with the Regional Scholarship and Innovation Fund (RSIF), hosted a half-day refresher workshop on August 6, 2025, focusing on the prevention of sexual harassment and effective grievance redress mechanisms. The event aimed to strengthen institutional safeguarding practices within academic environments.

Speaking at the opening, Prof. Mwemezi Rwiza, RSIF Coordinator at NM-AIST, emphasized the importance of proactive engagement in fostering safe and inclusive learning spaces. He highlighted the need to equip academic communities with practical tools and knowledge to prevent harassment and handle grievances appropriately.

The workshop brought together 34 participants, including RSIF scholars, faculty, and staff from NM-AIST and ICIPE, Nairobi. Through interactive sessions, expert panels, and peer learning activities, participants explored survivor-centered approaches and strategies for effective reporting and response, in alignment with RSIF’s Safeguarding Policy.

Mr. Bonface Nyagah, RSIF Capacity Building Officer at ICIPE, encouraged attendees to become safeguarding champions in their institutions. The workshop concluded with participants reaffirming their commitment to advocacy, collaboration, and continuous learning as essential drivers of accountability and lasting institutional change.
