The Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST), through the School of Computational and Communication Science and Engineering (CoCSE), has conducted an outreach and community engagement initiative aimed at fostering interest in Science and Mathematics among pupils in Arumeru District, Arusha.

Held on November 21, 2025, the activity involved visits to Nganana and Nambala primary schools as part of the Electronic Business course module. The initiative focused on inspiring young learners to understand the importance of Science and Mathematics in both education and everyday life.

During the visits, the CoCSE Dean, Dr. Judith Leo, emphasized that Science and Mathematics are approachable subjects when learners develop interest and commit to continuous practice. Accompanied by Master’s students from the Embedded and Mobile Systems (EMoS) program and CoCSE staff, she encouraged pupils to embrace confidence and curiosity as they engage with these subjects.

As part of the outreach, EMoS students offered practical demonstrations using scientific tools, including computers, to equip pupils with hands-on experience. Students Yahana Kangwe, Godgifty Kimaro, and Justine James highlighted the foundational role of Mathematics across various disciplines and explained how Science provides solutions to community challenges.

Speaking on behalf of the EMoS cohort, Johnson Makauki expressed gratitude to NM-AIST for supporting the initiative and empowering pupils with practical skills and motivation to pursue scientific learning.

This outreach effort aligns with NM-AIST’s 5D Business Model, in which Outreach and Community Engagement stand as key pillars.
