On 26 January 2026, Prof. Maulilio Kipanyula, Vice Chancellor of the Nelson Mandela African
Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST), hosted the UNDP Resident Representative to
Tanzania, Mr. Shigeki Komatsubara, and his delagates for discussions on potential areas of
collaboration.

Prof. Kipanyula highlighted several areas for partnership opportunities, including UNDP UniPods,
industry attachments for staff and students, digital transformation, smart agriculture, and climate-
resilient green economy initiatives, notably a waste-to-wealth programme.

During his remarks, Mr. Komatsubara expressed his appreciation to the Vice Chancellor and NM-AIST
faculty for the warm reception. He was impressed not only by its scenic environment but also by its
strong emphasis on research, innovation, and talent development—including advanced digital and
AI laboratories and supercomputer (HPC).

He commended the Institution’s commitment to nurturing future leaders, empowering young
innovators, and translating academic excellence into practical solutions for society. This vision, he
noted, closely aligns with UNDP’s mission to invest in talent, opportunities and the future of
Tanzania.

Mr. Komatsubara further applauded NM-AIST’s dedication to excellence and social impact and
expressed UNDP’s interest in strengthening collaboration to drive meaningful change in Tanzania
and beyond.

The discussions also explored NM-AIST’s potential participation in UNDP programmes, with a focus
on institutional readiness and strategic alignment.
