The Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST) and the Ministry of Agriculture have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate in research and innovation aimed at enhancing the use of digital technologies in the agricultural sector.
The signing ceremony took place on April 14, 2025, at the conference hall of the Ministry of Agriculture in Dodoma.
“This step gives our institution the opportunity to be part of the major and historic reforms being carried out by the Ministry of Agriculture in the country’s agricultural sector,” said Prof. Maulilio Kipanyula.
He added that the systems involved will simplify the collection, maintenance, and processing of various types of data within the agricultural sector.

In addition to collaborating on building the capacity of employees and other stakeholders in the agricultural sector through long-term and short-term training—such as workshops, seminars, training sessions, and professional consultations, both parties are committed to increasing the knowledge and skills necessary to meet the demands of the rapidly evolving agricultural environment.
At another point, Prof. Kipanyula commended the leadership of the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Hon. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, particularly for the significant reforms being implemented in the agricultural sector. He noted that these reforms are inspiring the public—especially the youth, to recognize agriculture as a viable business opportunity, comparable to other sectors.
For his part, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Mr. Gerald Mweli, emphasized that the collaboration is broad and will enable various experts in the Ministry to benefit from NM-AIST’s research expertise to increase agricultural productivity.
He also noted that the Nelson Mandela Institution will support the sector in acquiring modern technologies to combat the root causes of crop diseases, thereby improving productivity for farmers.
