The Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST) participated on the mid-term review meeting on October 22, 2024, in Mwanza region as key stakeholders came together to discuss the project’s progress and future direction of the HEET project, a significant initiative funded by the World Bank through the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology.

Mr. Daniel Fissoo, the Deputy Coordinator at NM-AIST, took the floor to present an encouraging update. With over 50% of each area of the project already implemented, he detailed the institution’s key focus areas on upgrading learning resources and equipment, modernizing the curriculum, and introducing innovative teaching methodologies. He emphasized the importance of promoting applied research and building strong partnerships with the private sector, aiming to enhance the institution’s innovation capacity.

Further, Mr. Fisso shared exciting developments in digital education, including the creation of online learning platforms and customized Moodle-based environments. He also highlighted the establishment of state-of-the-art ICT infrastructure and the vital role of capacity building in online and Open
Distance Learning (ODL) education to generate self-sustaining income that would support the institution’s growth and adaptability.

As the meeting unfolded, Prof. Peter Msofe, Director of Science and Technology at the Ministry of Education Science and Technology delivered stirring opening remarks by underlining the meeting’s purpose which is to ensure the HEET project was implemented fully and efficiently for the benefit
of the nation.”This initiative will enhance access to quality education and empower our graduates to contribute meaningfully to the country’s economic development” Prof. Msofe.

The discussion was further enriched by insights from Prof. Roberta Basset Malee, who spoke on behalf of the World Bank team. She outlined their mission to gather comprehensive implementation information from various institutions.
