The Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST) recently hosted a seminar on June 23, 2024, in Arusha, dedicated to promoting inclusive education and raising awareness about special needs. This event was part of the Higher Education for Economic Transformation(HEET Project), which aims to enhance scholars’ ability to support individuals with special needs, thereby strengthening mental health and fostering community unity.

Representing the Vice Chancellor, Dr. Mussa Dida, Dean of the School of Computational and Communication Science and Engineering (CoCSE), highlighted the necessity of prioritizing the needs of individuals with special needs within the academic community and beyond. Dr. Dida emphasized that such a focus is crucial for promoting mental health and fostering a cohesive community.

Dr. Magreth Matonya, Director of Special Education, provided an in-depth look at the various types of special needs. She discussed strategies for identifying individuals with special needs, aiming to reduce stigma and encourage appropriate interventions and support.

Ms. Analyce Ichwekeleza, Director of Student Services, underscored the importance of unity and cooperation among scholars. She advocated for the sharing of information to ensure individuals with special needs receive the necessary support and assistance.

The seminar included expert-led discussions on significant issues such as mental health and sexual violence. These sessions allowed scholars to engage with and learn from specialists, enhancing their understanding and ability to support individuals with special needs.

This seminar marks a crucial step towards creating a more inclusive and supportive educational environment at NM-AIST. By equipping scholars with the knowledge and skills to identify and assist individuals with special needs, the HEET Project aims to cultivate a community that values diversity and inclusivity.
