The Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST), in collaboration with Arusha Technical College (ATC), has officially launched a Green Energy Project aimed at transforming the livestock sector. The initiative is funded by the National Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH).
On November 7, 2025, Professor Yusufu Abeid Chande Jande, representing the Vice-Chief of the Institution, emphasized that the project marks a significant step in promoting the veterinary sector. He highlighted its potential to reduce post-harvest losses and called on all stakeholders, including pastoralists, to actively participate in its implementation to ensure success.

Researcher Dr. Juma Rajaba Selemani explained that the project’s main goal is to increase productivity in the veterinary sector by establishing modern infrastructure. This includes facilities to preserve livestock products such as meat and milk. He noted that one of the key innovations will be the creation of a solar-powered refrigeration system (Cooler), designed to ensure sustainable preservation and conservation of livestock products, particularly in Meru District.

Mr. Kundaeli Kindai commended NM-AIST for initiating the project, stating that it will significantly contribute to improving pastoralist incomes. He emphasized that the use of modern, eco-friendly conservation methods will enhance the storage of livestock products in bulk, reduce losses, and improve product quality for the marketplace.
