The National Advisory Committee on the Implementation of the Equal Generation Program has praised the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST) for its outstanding efforts in gender equality and motivating girls to pursue science.

During a visit on August 19, 2024, the Committee recognized the institution’s effective gender policy, school outreach initiatives, and inclusive infrastructure.

Nangi Masawe, representing the Committee Chairman, commended NM-AIST’s commitment to gender equality. She highlighted the institution’s proactive measures, such as visiting schools to inspire girls and promoting science clubs, as significant contributions to societal progress.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Maulilio Kipanyula outlined NM-AIST’s broader mission to be a leading hub for STEM education in Africa, focusing on gender equality in leadership, innovation, and technology.

Dr. Josephine Mkunda, the institution’s Gender Issues Coordinator, reported that their STEM outreach has reached about 4,830 students, including 3,167 girls and 1,663 boys, with 357 students having special needs, demonstrating a strong commitment to fostering interest in science and technology.
