In an inspiring step toward shaping the future of digital innovation in Tanzania, the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST) and NMB Bank have signed a groundbreaking Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
This five-year partnership, signed on March 7, 2025, at NM-AIST’s Tengeru Campus in Arusha, aims to identify, nurture, and propel innovation in digital technologies that will not only benefit industries but also empower society at large.
The MoU was officially signed by NMB’s Chief Human Resources Officer, Emmanuel Akonaay, who acknowledged the significance of this collaboration in the ever-evolving tech landscape.
During the signing ceremony, Prof. Maulilio Kipanyula, Vice Chancellor of NM-AIST, shared his vision for this partnership, emphasizing that the agreement would serve as a springboard for joint efforts between NM-AIST and NMB to secure financial resources to support and advance the research and innovations created by the institution’s scholars and students. The ultimate goal is to ensure these innovations transition from the classroom to real-world applications, benefiting industries and society at large.

“The collaboration provides an exciting opportunity for our students to gain hands-on, practical experience through internships at NMB Bank, where they will be exposed to industry insights and develop the skills needed for their future careers,” explained Prof. Maulilio.
Another critical aspect of the partnership is the shared commitment to equipping NM-AIST graduates with the entrepreneurial skills necessary for both employment and self-employment. Prof. Maulilio stressed that through the collaboration, graduates would receive the tools to navigate Tanzania’s fast-paced job market and make informed decisions, whether they pursue a career or start their own businesses.
“At NM-AIST, we understand the importance of technology in creating job opportunities, and we’re proud to partner with NMB to create platforms where these opportunities can thrive,” said Prof. Maulilio. “This partnership will help bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world application, particularly within the growing digital economy.”
On the other hand, Mr. Emmanuel Akonaay, NMB’s Chief Human Resources Officer, expressed his excitement about the agreement, highlighting the bank’s belief in the transformative power of technology for Tanzania’s future. He emphasized that sustainable development relies on equipping Tanzanians with the right skills to adapt to the rapid pace of technological advancements.

“We are proud to invest in this collaboration as part of our commitment to empowering young talent in technology and communications. We want to foster a culture of innovation within Tanzania, ensuring that our graduates are equipped not only with knowledge but with the skills to drive change in every sector,” Mr. Akonaay said.
He further revealed that NMB is dedicated to supporting entrepreneurship and addressing financial challenges in the digital age. “This collaboration also seeks to improve financial literacy, helping graduates understand financial tools and concepts that can transform their careers, businesses, and the economy,” he added.
Representing the NM-AIST management, Prof. Suzana Augustino, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Planning, Finance, and Administration, called the agreement a important milestone in the institution’s journey. This partnership marks a critical step toward engaging industries and establishing the financial infrastructure needed to support the innovation process effectively.
“The partnership lays the foundation for a brighter future; one where technological advancement drives economic growth and enhances ICT accessibility. It will especially benefit underserved communities, such as women in rural areas, by providing them with the tools and resources to thrive in the digital economy,” Prof. Augustino said.

This partnership between NM-AIST and NMB is more than just a collaboration—it’s a commitment to shaping Tanzania’s technological landscape for years to come. By fostering a culture of innovation, developing practical skills, and empowering graduates with the resources they need, this alliance is poised to make a significant impact on the country’s economy and create lasting opportunities for individuals across the nation.
As technology continues to redefine industries and job markets, initiatives like this are crucial in ensuring that Tanzania remains at the forefront of innovation, ultimately leading to an empowered, digitally savvy workforce that can meet the demands of the future.
