
The Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST) has successfully implemented 98% of the Higher Education for Economic Transformation (HEET) Project, with the renovation of the teaching system being fully completed at 100%.
During a report presentation at a three-day working session at the Library Conference Hall of the University of Dar es Salaam, from March 10 to 12, 2025, Ms. Analyce Ichwekeleza outlined the project’s progress.She explained that the NM-AIST Institute focused on seven key areas for implementation: upgrading learning resources and equipment, updating curricula and introducing innovative pedagogical methods, promoting applied research and innovation capacity, building functional partnerships with the private sector and industry, developing online learning platforms and digital technology applications, customizing Moodle-based learning platforms, establishing state-of-the-art ICT infrastructure, and building capacity in academic staff and university leadership.

“So far, NM-AIST has utilized 83.65% of the allocated funds for the project, which includes various procurements and contracts,” said Ms. Ichwekeleza.
Regarding the laboratory development, she mentioned that laboratory equipment worth 4.3 billion Tanzanian Shillings, including renovations, is nearing completion. The certification process is also underway to enable the laboratory to process and test a variety of samples.

Additionally, Ms. Ichwekeleza highlighted that 64 students have been trained in various fields, with 53 earning doctoral degrees and 11 completing master’s degrees. Moreover, 34 staff members have participated in short-course training.

The implementation session brought together representatives from 22 higher education institutions involved in the project. The meeting serves as part of an ongoing requirement to assess progress every eight weeks and ensure the successful completion of the project.
