The Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology, in collaboration with FUES and STEMi-AFRICA, recently hosted the 4th Science and Mathematics Awards 2024. The event, themed “Inspiring Academic Excellence and Innovation, caring for the Earth and Community,” is an annual celebration that takes place every May. During the opening ceremony on May 31, 2024, Deputy Vice Chancellor of Academic, Research, and Innovation, Prof. Anthony Mshandete, delivered an inspiring speech, urging students to embrace science studies wholeheartedly to bolster the ranks of future engineers in various disciplines. “I implore you not to waver in your aspirations of becoming tomorrow’s scientists. Particularly to the young women, let no one obscure your brilliance as you ascend the academic ladder,” remarked Prof. Mshandete, his words resonating with the audience. The highlight of the evening was the presentation of awards, recognizing outstanding achievements in two distinct categories: academic excellence awards in STEM and community service awards. These accolades were bestowed upon students from twenty-eight secondary schools in Arusha, each exemplifying excellence and dedication in their respective fields. The ceremony served as a testament to the institution’s commitment to fostering a culture of academic excellence, innovation, and societal responsibility among the youth. As the event drew to a close, attendees departed with renewed motivation and a shared vision of a brighter, more scientifically literate future for Africa and beyond.
