A three-day international training on stereology has strengthened research skills among Tanzanian scientists, equipping them with advanced techniques to transform two-dimensional images into three-dimensional insights.
The training, held from September 30 to October 1, 2025, at the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST), was conducted by world-renowned experts Prof. Matthias Ochs from the University of Berlin, Germany, and Prof. Jens Nyengaard from Aarhus University Hospital, Denmark.

A key focus was on unbiased sampling techniques, which ensure equal representation of tissues, organs, and cells in research. Experts emphasized that the approach improves accuracy, reproducibility, and the overall reliability of scientific findings.
Participants came from NM-AIST and other leading institutions, including Bugando Medical Center (BMC), Kilimanjaro Christian Medical University College (KCMUCo), and the University of Dar es Salaam. With backgrounds in histology and imaging, they engaged in both theoretical sessions and practical exercises, gaining new skills to advance biomedical and applied sciences.

The training also provided a platform for cross-continental collaboration, linking Tanzanian researchers with international expertise in modern microscopy and stereology.
