Dr. Erasto Mlyuka

He is a Lecturer at the School of Life Sciences and Bioengineering (LiSBE) at the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST), Arusha, Tanzania. He has a profound background in Irrigation and sustainable agriculture, food processing technology, sub-critical water extraction of plant bioactive compounds, nutraceuticals and functional foods research and in 2015 the International Society for Nutraceuticals and Functional Foods (ISNFF awarded him a plaque in recognition of his outstanding performance in graduate studies and research on nutraceuticals and functional foods. He has majored in Agricultural Products Processing and Preservation Engineering with specialization in Protein Functionality and Sub-critical water extraction of plant bioactive compounds with human health potential. He possesses a doctorate degree in Agricultural Products Processing and Preservation Engineering from Jiangnan University in Wuxi City, in China that was awarded in 2016. Also he possesses a Master of Engineering degree in Agricultural Products Processing and Preservation Engineering from Jiangnan University in Wuxi City, in China that was awarded in 2010. He graduated in 2006 with a first degree in Horticulture from Sokoine University of Agriculture in Morogoro Municipal, in Tanzania.

Research interests

 Irrigation and Sustainable Agriculture, Organizational Strategies for Diversified Farming Systems, Post Harvest Management, Agro-processing, Sub-critical Water Extraction of Bioactive Compounds from Plants, Nutraceuticals and Functional Foods.

Master of Engineering& Ph.D. in Agricultural Products Processing & Preservation Engineering (Jiangnan University, China).

In terms of publications, he has seven publications in reputable international journals and is current supervising two masters students. At the NM-AIST, he is teaching Applied Research Methods, Issues in Sustainable Agriculture and Plant Tissue Culture.

In terms of experience, he has worked as a Senior Agricultural Officer at National Irrigation Commission –Mtwara Zonal Office for eleven years (2007 – 2018). He also worked as a breeding manager at Enza Zaden African Limited in Arusha for about a year (2006 -2007). Moreover he worked as a postgraduate student researcher at the Stake Key Laboratory of Food Science and Technology (SKLF) at Jiangnan University in China for eight years (2007-2016). Currently he is the acting Head of Sustainable Agriculture, Biodiversity and Ecosystem Management, Quality Assurance Member at NM-AIST representing the School of LiSBE, Chief Invigilator at the School of LiSBE, a Member of Workers Baraza of the NM-AIST representing the School of LiSBE and the elect Secretariat to the Second Workers Baraza of the NM-AIST.
