The Minister of Agriculture, Hon. Hussein Bashe, has called on the Nelson Mandela African Institute of Science and Technology (NM-AIST) to spearhead the production of indigenous seeds through close collaboration with farmers and other agricultural stakeholders.

Speaking during a meeting held on April 22, 2025, in Dodoma with NM-AIST Vice-Chancellor Prof. Maulilio Kipanyula, Hon. Bashe emphasized the urgent need to increase the availability of indigenous, hybrid, and genetically modified (GMO) seeds to stimulate agricultural growth and enhance national food security.

He also highlighted the strategic role of NM-AIST in leading the development of a center dedicated to agricultural innovation and technology.

Responding to the Minister’s call, NM-AIST Vice Chancellor Prof. Maulilio Kipanyula affirmed the institution’s readiness to support the initiative. He noted that NM-AIST has been working alongside seed scientists and the National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA) to evaluate and multiply seeds tailored to local conditions.

Prof. Kipanyula also pointed out that the institute possesses substantial resources, including over 1,000 hectares of land, which can be utilized for agricultural research, innovation, and seed development to support sustainable farming practices across the country.
