The Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST) in Arusha, Tanzania, is
one in a network of Pan-African Institutions of Science and- Technology located across Sub-Saharan
Africa (SSA). These institutions, which are the proud brainchild of the late Nelson Mandela, envision
training and developing the next generation of African scientists and engineers with a view to
profoundly impacting the continent’s development through the application of Science, Engineering,
Technology, and Innovation (SETI).
The NM-AIST, an accredited higher learning institution (HLI) by the Tanzania Commission for
Universities (TCU), is being developed into a world-class research-based institution for postgraduate
and postdoctoral studies and research and innovation in SET!.
The NM-AIST invites applications from suitably qualified and competent Tanzanians to fill two (2)
positions of Deputy Vice Chancellors as follows:-
1. Deputy Vice Chancellor – Academic, Research and Innovations (DVC-ARI)

A. Reporting Relationship
•   Appointed by: Chancellor
•   Reports to: Vice Chancellor
•   Supervises: Deans of Schools, Directors of Directorates, and Managers of Academic Units.
B. Entry Qualifications
•   Education: Holder of a PhD in Health/Biomedical Sciences, Biodiversity, Sustainable Agriculture,
Food Science, Math/Computer Science, Engineering (Information, Materials, Energy, Water,
Environmental), Innovation Management, Business, Economics, or related fields.
•   Experience: At least twelve (12) years of working experience, with at least three (3) years in a
managerial position.
•   Academic Rank: Must be an Associate Professor or Professor.
C. Duties and Responsibilities
•   Responsible to the Vice Chancellor for academic program delivery and administration.
•   Deputize for the Vice Chancellor during their absence or a vacancy.
•   Advise on matters pertaining to Research, Innovations, Quality Control, and Assurance.
•   Oversee research and innovation, postgraduate training, incubation management, and technology
and innovation commercialization.
D. Key Qualifications and Competencies
•   Distinguished research record with publications in reputable peer-reviewed journals.
•   Proven ability to mobilize competitive research funding nationally and internationally.
•   Experience in leading large-scale research programs and interdisciplinary initiatives.
•   Capacity to promote technology commercialization and university-industry collaboration.
E. Key Performance Expectations
•   Increase external research funding and projects.
•   Strengthen doctoral training and expand international collaborations.
•   Improve institutional visibility and citation impact.
•   Promote startups and spin-off companies establishment from research and innovation activities.

2. Deputy Vice Chancellor – Planning, Finance and Administration (DVC-PFA)
A. Reporting Relationship
•   Appointed by: Chancellor
•   Reports to: Vice Chancellor
•   Supervises: Directors and Managers of Non-Academic Directorates and Units respectively.
B. Entry Qualifications
•   Education: Holder of a PhD in relevant Science, Engineering, Finance, Economics, or
Management fields.
•   Experience: At least twelve (12) years of working experience, with at least three (3) years in a
managerial position.
•   Academic Rank: Must be an Associate Professor or Professor.
•   Added Advantage: Solid background in Strategic Planning, Finance, Accounting, or Public
Administration.
C. Duties and Responsibilities
•   Responsible for Administrative, Human Resources, and Financial matters.
•   Principal assistant to the Vice Chancellor in Planning and Administration of funds/assets.
•   Supervise staff discipline and oversee the development of staff within the Institution.
D. Key Qualifications and Competencies
•   Strong experience in strategic planning, budgeting, and resource management.
•   Leadership in financial oversight and compliance with public financial regulations.
•   Demonstrated capacity in infrastructure planning and campus development.
•   Ability to implement digital transformation and operational modernization.
E. Key Performance Expectations
•   Strengthen financial sustainability and diversify revenue streams.
•   Lead campus infrastructure expansion and modernization.
•   Implement digital governance and improve administrative efficiency.
•   Promote startups and spin-off companies establishment and management.

3. General Terms & Application Process
Terms of Engagement
• Tenure: Four (4) years, renewable once for a second term of four (4) years based on performance.
• Commencement: Expected start date is 1 September, 2026.
