The Executive Secretary of the National Planning Commission, Dr. Fred Msemwa, has emphasized the importance of transforming scientific innovations into tangible products that directly contribute to national economic growth in line with Tanzania’s Development Vision 2050.
During his visit to the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST), Dr. Msemwa praised the institution for its efforts in promoting and developing technological innovations aligned with the Vision’s goals.
“This institution sets a great example of how we can leverage expertise and innovation to improve the lives of Tanzanians. We cannot achieve Vision 2050 without developing our innovations and commercializing them as products,” said Dr. Msemwa.

He further noted that the government, through the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, remains a key partner by providing essential infrastructure for research and development.
On his part, NM-AIST Vice Chancellor, Prof. Maulilio J. Kipanyula, stated that the institution aims to become a National Technology Park – a hub for nurturing innovations and turning them into market-ready products.
“The innovations we’ve witnessed today, including a robot designed to carry industrial loads, are proof of our institution’s real contribution to Vision 2050,” Prof. Kipanyula remarked.

Deputy Vice Chancellor for Finance, Planning and Administration, Prof. Suzana Agustino, added that the core goal is to turn academic knowledge into viable business ventures, thereby strengthening the national economy through graduates and local innovators.
“Our aim isn’t just to offer higher education, but to produce graduates who are technological innovators and entrepreneurs, and in doing so, contribute to national income,” said Prof. Agustino.
This visit confirmed that NM-AIST is playing a vital role in Tanzania’s journey towards becoming a technology-driven industrial economy, rooted in innovation and knowledge.
