Hon. Emmanuela Mtatifikolo Kaganda, Arumeru District Commissioner, has urged researchers from the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology to utilize water treatment technology in Oldonyosambu and Oldonyowas counties to address challenges caused by high fluoride levels in the water.
Hon. Emmanuela made these remarks on July 16, 2024, during the closing ceremony of the Vlir-ous project at the institution in Arusha. The project, spanning nearly 11 years, focused on various research initiatives including clean banana seedlings, natural mediators for mosquito control, constructed wetlands, and fluoride removal technology.
“The government remains committed to supporting Nelson Mandela Institution, and I believe the completion of this project marks the beginning of continued collaboration with our Belgian partners, opening avenues for further studies aimed at societal solutions,” said Hon. Emmanuela.
Speaking on behalf of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Anthony Mshandete, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Academic Affairs, Research, and Innovation at the institution, highlighted the efficacy of the water treatment technology developed through the project, emphasizing its application across different regions to tackle community challenges.

Principal Investigator of the Project Prof. Karoli Njau noted that the Vlir-ous project has significantly advanced operational capabilities at the institution, particularly in professional development, laboratory enhancements, and scholarship opportunities for master’s and doctoral students.
