The Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST) has launched a four-day training program for 100 dairy farmers from Hai District under the Precision Livestock Farming (PLF) project. The initiative aims to increase farmers’ knowledge of technology and improve productivity in the livestock sector.

Dr. Francis Moyo, Dean of the School of Life Sciences and Bioengineering (LISBE), stated that the institution conducts research to address the challenges faced by farmers and has already reached over 100 participants.
According to Prof. Gabriel Shirima, PLF Project Coordinator, the technology enables farmers to monitor their cattle’s health, reproductive cycles, and nutrition using mobile phones, making livestock management more efficient and data-driven.

Farmers reported that the system has boosted milk production and simplified record-keeping. Hai District Livestock Officer, Mr. Jeremia Lukumay, added that the project has increased motivation and improved the delivery of livestock services.
NM-AIST has pledged to continue advancing the project to further enhance farmers’ livelihoods through modern, technology-driven livestock farming.
